Since 2016, the Shining Smile Project has been committed to providing vital dental care to individuals who have successfully completed rehabilitation programs. The effects of substance use can take a toll on oral health, and many in recovery may hesitate to seek treatment due to concerns about stigma and discrimination.

 

Our mission goes far beyond just restoring smiles; we aim to foster social reintegration, increase employability, and encourage individuals to be beacons of hope for others on similar journeys. Each dental treatment represents a chance to restore dignity, elevate self-esteem, and inspire optimism for a brighter future. So far, we have proudly facilitated over 500 dental treatments for individuals determined to rebuild their lives.

In 2023, we expanded our work to support vulnerable young mothers who have recently given birth, recognising that maternity is a critical window for improving oral health for both mother and child. We provide free dental care to address their immediate oral health needs and to protect the well‑being of their babies.

By reducing oral disease and harmful bacteria in mothers, we help lower the risk of early childhood dental problems and create a healthier start for the next generation. Through individual consultations and simple, practical education, our team equips young mothers with the knowledge and confidence to care for their own oral health and that of their babies. This targeted support not only eases the burden on families facing financial and social challenges but also invests in long‑term health outcomes that benefit the wider community.
